New York City apartments are not always the most plant-friendly environments. North-facing windows, radiator heat, dry winter air, and the occasional week-long work trip all take a toll. But the right plants don't just survive these conditions — they thrive in them. Here are our top picks from the plant section of our Upper East Side shop.

Peace lily (Spathiphyllum). One of the most forgiving indoor plants available. Peace lilies tolerate low light, irregular watering, and dry air better than almost any other flowering plant. They'll even tell you when they're thirsty — the leaves droop slightly before perking back up after a good drink. They also filter indoor air, which is a bonus in a city apartment.

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum). If you've ever killed a plant and sworn off houseplants forever, pothos is the plant that will change your mind. It grows in low light, tolerates irregular watering, and trails beautifully from a shelf or hanging planter. It's nearly impossible to kill and grows quickly enough to feel rewarding.

Snake plant (Sansevieria). The ultimate low-maintenance plant. Snake plants thrive on neglect — they prefer to dry out completely between waterings and handle low light without complaint. Their upright, architectural form works well in small spaces, and they're one of the best air-purifying plants available.

ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). The ZZ plant stores water in its thick rhizomes, making it exceptionally drought-tolerant. It grows slowly but steadily in low to medium light and has a glossy, deep-green appearance that looks polished in any interior. Water it once every two to three weeks and largely ignore it — it will reward you.

Orchids (Phalaenopsis). We sell a lot of orchids, and for good reason. A well-cared-for phalaenopsis orchid can bloom for three to six months and re-bloom year after year. They prefer bright indirect light — a spot near an east-facing window is ideal — and need watering only once a week. They're one of the most elegant plants you can keep in a Manhattan apartment.

Succulents and cacti. If your apartment gets good direct light — a south- or west-facing window — succulents and cacti are excellent choices. They need very little water (once every two to three weeks in summer, once a month in winter) and come in an enormous variety of shapes and sizes. They're also ideal for small windowsills and desk spaces.
